Emergency Information

HORSEMEN, we need your help!! There is a need to identify facilities
(stables, barns, fair grounds and etc.) through out the state that will accept horses in the event of an emergency or disaster be it man made or natural.

Several years ago the Disaster Animal Care & Control Committee
(DACCC) was formed to work with the Virginia Department of Emergency
Management to set up a plan for the handling of all animals, both
domesticated and wild, in the event of a disaster. This project is being
coordinated by the Virginia Disaster Animal Care & Control Committee with the assistance of the Virginia Horse Council.

As summer fast approaches, so does the hurricane season. Many of us are
not prepared for a hurricane or any type of disaster that would require us to evacuate ourselves and our equines. Do you know where you would go if you had to move your horse or horses? Of course two places spring to mind, Colonial Downs and The Virginia Horse Center. But what if they
cannot accommodate your equine or they are also being affected by the
disaster. Where would you go?

Hurricane Katrina has changed all of our lives and made us painfully aware of what can happen during and after a disaster, if we are not ready to move ourselves & animals out of harms way. DACCC is in the process of identifying those facilities that will accept evacuating equines. This will be a valuable resource tool in the event of another disaster.

We need your help in establishing this data base. If you have the facilities to handle evacuating equines and are willing to shelter displaced equines during a disaster, please download the Farm/Stable Registration Form for assisting evacuating equines in the Commonwealth of Virginia, fill it out and return to Sue Hecht at vshecht@ntelos.net or via mail to P. O. Box 57, Brownsburg, VA 24415, FAX 540-348-6293.
