Stratford Hall Facts:

  • The Great House was built c. 1738 and is truly one of the finest Colonial homes in Virginia. Interior features include the Great Hall, which has been often described as one of the most beautiful rooms in America. Exterior features include the chimney clusters which help give its distinctive character.

  • Several generations of Lees lived at Stratford, including Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, the only two brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence. Robert E. Lee was the last Lee in his generation born at Stratford Hall on January 19, 1807.

  • Stratford Hall is located on 1,900 acres along the Potomac River. The cliffs on the bluffs of the Potomac River are a Miocene formation which are found only in three other places in the world, the Los Angles Basin, Austria and Belgium.
